About the mine
About the mine
The Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is one of the world’s most famous native copper districts. Copper occurs here as natural metallic masses within ancient basalt lava flows of the Midcontinent Rift, formed over 1.1 billion years ago. Historic mines such as the Calumet & Hecla and Quincy produced exceptional specimens and helped shape North American mining history. Today, native copper from Keweenaw is prized for its sculptural forms, sharp crystalline features, and classic Great Lakes provenance.
