Halite, or rock salt, is found in many parts of the world, including California. In California, halite deposits are found in the Mojave Desert and the Salton Sea region. The halite deposits in the Mojave Desert are part of a larger evaporite deposit known as the Searles Lake deposit, which also contains other minerals such as borax and trona. The halite deposits in the Salton Sea region are part of a larger evaporite deposit known as the Imperial Valley deposit, which also contains minerals such as gypsum and anhydrite. These deposits were formed millions of years ago as the result of the evaporation of ancient seas.
